Claire Bennet of Heroes can no longer claim to be the only one with the ability to grow back a broken limb. Thanks to recent advancements in technology finger regeneration is now a reality. Re-growing severed fingertips is now possible without having to worry about the patient’s body rejecting the new finger. The even more amazing thing about the new technology used is that all that is needed is a sprinkle of the “magic powder” on the sliced off finger!

The “magic powder” used to regrow fingers is actually composed mostly of collagen mixed with the extracellular matrix extracted from pig bladder. An extracellular matrix is the material that surrounds the cells . This material is not part of the animal cell but it does determine the properties of the cell tissue. It is composed of fibrous elements, link proteins, and space filling molecules. According to Dr. Steven Badylak of the University of Pittsburgh’s McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine what the mixture does is to simply “tell the body [to] start the process of tissue regrowth.”

The pig bladder extract (ACell Vet) is actually marketed by a company called Acell Inc but is used to treat tendon and ligament injuries in horses. Other applications of the product include treatment of urinary incontinence, hoof and hoof wall injuries, de-gloving injuries, corneal ulcers, dental extractions, burns, and more. All of these applications, however, are meant to treat animals. The good news is that with all the recent happenings the FDA has finally approved ACell Vet for human use.

Due to the success of the the extract when it comes to human finger regeneration there is much excitement and lots of speculation flying around as to what this can mean for the field of regenrative medicine. According to Associated Press “the lessons learned from studying regrowth of fingers and limbs could aid the larger field of regenerative medicine, perhaps someday helping people replace damaged parts of their hearts and spinal cords, and heal wounds and burns with new skin instead of scar tissue.” How true. Who knows maybe the regeneration of entire limbs is just around the corner. A thing that would help thousands of people who lose limbs in accidents and in war.

People want to be able to get what they need whenever and wherever they happen to be. Technology’s answer to this demand are mobile devices.

A mobile device, also known as hand-held device or converged device, is a pocket sized computing device that allows people to do at least one or a combination of the following things: play games, take pictures/videos, make calls, type documents, read ebooks, surf the internet and so much more. It is hard to enumerate the things you can do with different mobile devices since new technologies are sprouting so fast resulting in new kinds of mobile devices capable of new things.

Focusing on Mobile Phones

The rapid pace in which mobile devices is very obvious. Just a few decades back the mobile phones that are used on a daily basis now was more sci-fi than reality. They were things Trekkers daydreamed about and many ordinary people felt was ages away from being discovered. In fact walkie talkies weren’t invented until the 1940s. Mobile phones with direct dialing arrived a decade later in the 1950s with the first successful public commercial mobile phone network not arriving till the 70s in Finland. In the US it was only in 1983 that the first handheld mobile phone came thanks to Motorola. Soon after the first mobile phone, the Motorola DynaTac, more analog mobile models were developed. These phones are the first generation mobile phone (1G0. The development of mobile phones gained even more momentum in the 90s and the second generation (2G) phone started coming out model after model. It was also in the 1990s that the first digital mobile phone was made and the first GSM network opened.

Come the 21st century an new mobile phone technology called 3G (third generation) emerged making the features offered even by 2G phones pale by comparison. 3G phones allow for transimission speeds of 384 Kbps for mobile systems and as much as up to 2 Mbps for stationary systems! Because of this 3G phones offer unparalled data services so that live streaming of online videos and even TV shows are possible.

With all the advances in mobile technology we can only imagine the things that we can do with our phones a few years from now.

Who hasn’t wondered whether some of the things we read in sci-fi books will eventually become a reality? I for one definitely am thrilled with all the leaps and bounds in technology that have turned some of the fiction into fact and might someday turn even the seemingly impossible fiction into a reality. If you are one who enjoys not just mulling over these stuff but actually understanding the scientific basis behind seemingly impossible phenomena that you hope to become possible one day then you will find Michio Kaku’s book, Physics of the Impossible, really impossible to resist.

The book “Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel” as you can see from the title deals with cool topics from phasers to time travel. Aside from the topics mentioned in the title the book also discusses other impossible technologies such as:

invisibility cloak- someday possible using concepts of optics and electromagnetism

star travel - someday possible using all kinds of technologies from laser sails to nanorockets

telepathy and psychokinesis - would one day be more than pseudoscience thanks to advancements in superconductivity, nanotechnology, etc.

The wonderful thing about this book is that it not only stretches your imagination but it also helps makes you realise the fact that there is so much more to be discovered, invented, and conceptualized.

For those who are skeptical about the soundness of the book you would do well to know that the author, Michio Kaku, is the Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and the co-founder of string field theory. He knows even more than what he is talking about. And in case you fear that it might all go over your head the good thing about the book is though a background in Physics is necessary to understand all the intricacies behind the concepts each “impossible technology” is actually discussed in such a way as to make it readable. He also draws parallels and refers to things that laymen will understand such as Star Trek, Men in Black, etc. making the book not only possible to read and understand but also highly entertaining.

This is a good thing because the environment needs all the help it can get. The earth, and therefore its inhabitants, can no longer afford the abuse and neglect we humans have been subjecting it to. It is time that we step up and take active steps to slow down and even counter the degradation of our environment.

Technology and people hand-in-hand

As individuals we can take a lot of small steps to help the environment. Things like turning of appliances when not in use and recycling waste material. Realistically speaking though this is not enough to save the earth. Sure it will help slow down earth’s death but without technology’s help it is virtually impossible to REVERSE the negative effects we have already had. Technology has contributed to the destruction of the environment should now be used to save it. However, just like our small contributions is not enough to save the earth the existence of environmental-friendly technology isn’t enough to save it either. Truth be told technology has already yielded plenty of alternative equipment, processes, and materials that would benefit the environment. The problem now lies not in the lack of available technology but more in the actual implementation and use of the existing technology. Unless environmental-friendly technology is adapted by humans on a large scale then the technology will be useless. In short, technology and our individual efforts need to go hand-in-hand to save the environment.
Cool Eco-Friendly Technology

Just so you get an idea of the eco-friendly technology available today here are links to some of the latest and coolest technological advances I have found in the internet.
